Dental Re-Contouring

What is dental recontouring and when is it used?

Dental recontouring is a very conservative and painless procedure that involves reshaping the enamel of teeth to improve their appearance or function. It is often used to fix small chips and straighten incisal edges, but is also useful in removing pits, reducing bulges in teeth or altering the shape of a tooth. In addition, it can improve a patient's dental health by removing crevices or overlaps between teeth where plaque and tartar tend to accumulate. It is not used to correct more substantial imperfections. While often used in conjunction with bonding or veneers, it is not a substitute for these procedures.

What is involved?

Prior to recontouring, x-rays may be taken to determine the thickness of enamel and the location of the pulp tissues. An anesthetic is not normally needed since treatment generally only involves the enamel. To reshape the tooth, fine diamonds, disks and strips are used and the surface is then polished.

Are there risks?

Because enamel cannot be replaced once removed the only risk involves the thickness of enamel. If the enamel becomes too thin or if dentin is exposed, a tooth may become sensitive. This is why careful planning is important.

Is there follow-up?

Follow up is not normally required. The benefits of recontouring are immediate and can greatly improve the appearance of a patient's smile.
